| Disease | DAILY DOSING FOR SIX DAYS FOLLOWED BY CHALLENGING THE ANIMALS TO SWIMMING STRESS(WITH WEIGHTED TAIL). THE TIME LAPSING BEFORE THE ANIMALS WERE UNABLE TO KEEP SWIMMING WAS NOTED. A GROUP OF ANIMALS WAS SIMILARLY TREATED BUT WITHOUT WEIGHTS ATTACHED TO THE TAILS. MEASUREMENTS OF SERUM LACTIC ACID, FAT, GLUCOSE, HEPATIC AND MUSCLE PROTEIN, DNA,RNA, FAT AND GLYCOGEN LEVELS WERE ALSO MEASURED. THE STUMULATED MUSCLE GLYCOGEN LEVEL OF THE TREATED RATS DROPPED FROM 13.2 TO 4.9 MG/GM WHILE THE CONTROL GROUP DROPPED FROM 13.4 TO 2.2 MG/GM. SIMILARLY THE LIVER GLYCOGEN OF TREATED RATS DROPPED FROM 41.5 TO 12.0 MG/GM WHILE THAT OF CONTROLS WENT FROM 27.3 TO 3.65 MG/GM. SERUM LACTIC ACID OF TREATED RATS WAS MAINTAINED BETWEEN 22 MG% AND 20 MG% WHILE THE CONTROL GROUP WAS RAISED FROM 24 MG% TO OVER 30 MG% THE SWIMMING TIME IN THE TREATED GROUP WAS 49.2 MIN (100 MG/KG OF EXTRACT) AND 44.5 MIN IN THE 200 MG/KG TREATED GROUP. CONTROLS HAD A SWIMMING TIME OF 19.7 MIN. OTHER DATA ARE PRESENTED WITH REGARD TO METABOLIC PARAMETERS. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT WHEN UNDER STRESS OR FATIGUE, TREATED RATS, THROUGH AN UNKNOWN MECHANISM, STIMULATE THE UTILIZATION OF FAT AS A SOURCE OF ENERGY. PROTEIN AND RNA SYNTHESIS WAS ALSO STIMULATED IN THE MUSCLE AND LIVER OF TREATED ANIMALS. |
