| Disease | THE PHENOMENON OF SOIL SICKNESS IN THE CONTINUOUS CROPPING OF GINSENG IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM ENCOUNTERED IN CULTIVATION OF THIS PLANT. HUMIC SUBSTANCES ISOLATED FROM BOTH CULTIVATED AND UNCULTIVATED SOILS IN WHICH GINSENG WAS GROWING WERE COMPARED WITH RESPECT TO IR SPECTRA. THERE WAS NO DIFFERENCE IN THESE HUMIC SUBSTANCES FROM THE TWO SOILS. IN CONTRAST, SOME SAPONIN-LIKE SUBSTANCES EXTRACTED FROM THE GINSENG CULTIVATED SOILS IN THE AREA OF ROOTS WERE DETECTED THAT WERE NOT FOUND IN THE UNCULTIVATED SOILS. PRESUMABLY, THE SAPONIN-LIKE SUBSTANCES IN THE SOIL ORIGINATED FROM GINSENG ROOTS AND ACCUMULATE IN THE SOIL NEAR THE ROOTS FROM YEAR TO YEAR. ACCORDING TO A SURVEY OF THE PATTERN OF MICROFLORA IN THE RHIZOSPHERE OF GINSENG ROOTS, THE NUMBER OF FUNGI DECREASES AS THE NUMBER OF CULTIVATED YEARS INCREASES. HOWEVER, THE NUMBER OF ACTINOMYCES INCREASES AT THE SAME TIME. IT IS PRESUMED THAT THE SOIL SICKNESS FOUND DURING CONTINUOUS CROPPING OF GINSENG HAS A CORRELATION WITH THE ACTIVITIES OF THE MICROFLORA IN THE RHIZOSPHERE AND THE ROOT EXUDATES. |
