| Disease | DAILY DOSING FOR FOUR DAYS WITH SILYMARIN-N-METHYLGLUCAMINE SALT. THERE WAS A DIMINISHED INHIBITORY EFFECT OF D-GALACTOSAMINE ON LIVER PROTEIN AND MICROSOMAL GLYCOPROTEIN BIOSYNTHESIS. THE SPECIFIC ACTIVITY OF UDP-N-ACEYYLHEXOSAMINE,LABELLED IN VIVO BY (14-C)-GLUCOSE, WAS HIGHER IN THE LIVER OF RATS TREATED WITH GALACTOSAMINE THAN IN RATS PRETREATED WITH THE TITLE COMPOUND HAVING D-GALACTOSAMINE HEPATITIS. IN ADDITION, LABELLING OF THE MICROSOMAL GLYCOPROTEINS WAS DECREASED BY D-GALACTOSAMINE, AND PARTIALLY RESTORED BY SILYMARIN. APPARENTLY,SILYMARIN ACTIVATES THE METABOLIC TRANSFORMATION OF UDP-HEXOSAMINE INTO THE ACETYLATED PRODUCT UDP-N-ACETYLHEXOSAMINE,WHICH IS A NORMAL CELL METABOLITE,THUS,THE SYNTHESIS OF DEFECTIVE GLYCOPROTEINS IS DIMINISHED. |
