| Disease | YOHIMBINE ENHANCED THE PRODUCTION OF PARADOXICAL SLEEP(PS) IN THE 11-HOUR EEG RECORDING. A DOSE OF 3.0 MG/KG DEPRESSED PS SLIGHTLY DURING THE FIRST 200 MINUTES OF SLEEP. ADMINISTRATION OF 150 MG/KG ALPHA-METHYL-PARA-TYROSINE (AMPT), INEFFECTIVE BY ITSELF, 0.5 HOURS BEFORE A SMALL DOSE OF 30 MCG/KG YOHIMBINE, PREVENTED THE INCREASE OF PS SEEN AFTER YOHIMBINE ALONE. THE PRODUCTION OF PS AFTER THIS COMBINATION WAS SIMILIAR TO THAT OF AMPT,150 MG/KG ALONE. IN CONTRAST, THE COMBINED TREATMENT WITH AMPT AND YOHIMBINE (3.0 MG/KG) RESULTED IN A VERY MARKED DECREASE OF PS. THE ENHANCED PRODUCTION OF PS AFTER A LOW DOSE OF YOHIMBINE CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO A PREFERENTIAL BLOCKADE OF PRESYNAPTIC NORADRENERGIC RECEPTORS,WHEREAS MUCH HIGHER DOSES ARE NECESSARY TO BLOCK THE POSTSYNAPTIC RECEPTORS. |
