DiseaseYOHIMBINE HAD NO FURTHER ANTIDEPRESSANT EFFECT ON 5 DEPRESSED PATIENTS TREATED UNSUCCESSFULLY FOR 3 WKS. WITH TRICYCLIC ANTIDEPRESSANTS,WHEN ADMIN. IN INCREASING DOSES IN COMBINATION WITH ANTIDEPRESSANTS(AMITRIPTYLINE,IMPRIMINE,CHLORIMIPRIMINE). THE ADMINISTRATION OF YOHIMBINE IN COMBINATION WITH ANTIDEPRESSANTS LED TO AN INCREASE IN NORADRENALINE (NA) SERUM CONCENTRATIONS AND TO THE APPEARANCE OF SUCH SIDE EFFECTS AS RESTLESSNESS,FEAR AND INCREASES IN BLOOD PRESSURE. AS OPPOSED TO DESIMIPRIME(DMI),YOHIMBINE DID NOT STIMULATE GROWTH HORMONE (GH) SECRETION BUT DID CAUSE AN INCREASE IN THE NORADRENALINE (NA) SERUM CONCENTRATION. YOHIMBINE SIGNIFICANGLY SUPPRESSED THE DMI-INDUCED GH STIMULATION IN HEALTHY SUBJECTS. APPARENTLY YOHIMBINE HAS NO ANTIDEPRESSANT EFFECT EITHER AFTER ADMINISTRATION ALONE OR AFTER ADMINISTRATION IN COMBINATION WITH TRICYCLIC ANTIDEPRESSANTS. THE LACK OF A GH STIMULATING EFFECT OF YOHIMBINE, AS OPPOSED TO DMI,SHOWS THAT YOHIMBINE DOES NOT, AS DOES DMI, INCREASE POSTSYNAPTIC STIMULATION. THE INHIBITORY EFFECT OF YOHIMBINE ON THE DMI-INDUCED GH SECRETION SUGGESTS THAT YOHIMBINE HAS AN ANTAGONISTIC EFFECT ON THE DMI-INDUCED POSTSYNAPTIC STIMLUATION.
