| Disease | A TOTAL OF 6 FEMALE SUBJECTS WERE STUDIED IN A 3-WAY CROSSOVER TO COMPARE THE PERCUTANEOUS ABSORPTION(AS DETERMINED BY BLOOD LEVELS) OF METHYL SALICYLATE(MS) IN DIFFERENT FORMULATIONS-A COMMERCIAL BALM, A HYDROPHILIC OINTMENT AND AN AQUEOUS SOLUTION. 3 GRAMS EQUIVALENT OF MS WAS APPLIED TO THE HANDS FOR 15 MIN. FOLLOWED BY WASHING WITH SOAP AND DRYING. BLOOD SAMPLES WERE OBTAINED BEFORE APPLICATION, THEN AT 15 & 30 MIN,1,2 AND 4 HR INTERVALS AFTER APPLICATION. MS WAS DETERMINED USING A FLUROMETRIC ASSAY. BLOOD LEVELS PEAKED AT THE 15 OR 30 MINUTE INTERVALS, DEPENDING ON THE FORMUTION, REMAINED RELATIVELY HIGH AT 1 HOUR AND DECLINED SLOWLY DURING THE 2 AND 4 HOUR INTERVALS. WHILE THE AQUEOUS SOLUTION YIELDED NUMERICALLY HIGHER BLOOD LEVES,THESE DIFFERENCES WERE NOT STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT. RATES AND DEGREES OF ABSORPTION WERE ESSENTIALLY SIMILAR FOR ALL 3 FORMATIONS OF MS. |
