EVIDENCE OF INFERTILITY WAS BASED ON SEMEN ANALYSIS, I.E. NECROSPERMIA OR SPERM COUNT LESS THAN 4 MILLION/ML. ABOUT 99.89% OF SUBJECTS TAKING GOSSYPOL ACHIEVED THESE CRITERIA AFTER ACHIEVING INFERTILITY THE SUBJECTS WERE SHIFTED TO A MAINTENANCE DOSE OF 150-200 MG/MONTH IN DIVIDED DOSES. ABOUT 3 MONTHS WAS REQUIRED TO ACHIEVE FERTILITY AFTER DISCONTINUING GOSSYPOL. ONE OF CHIEF SIDE EFFECTS WAS THE DEVELOPMENT OF TRANSIENT WEAKNESS IN EARLY DAYS OF GOSSYPOL ADMINISTRATION(12.8% INCIDENCE). OTHER SIDE EFFECTS WERE INCREASE IN APPETITE(3.0%):DECREASE IN APPETITE(2.4%):EPIGASTRIC DISCOMFORT(2.0%):NAUSEA(1.0%):LOSS OF LIBIDO(66.0%)BUT POTENCY WAS NOT IMPAIRED. SERUM TESTOSTERONE LEVELS REMAINED WITHIN NORMAL LIMITS,AS DID BLOOD LH.A FEW SUBJECTS DEVELOPED TRANSIENT ELEVATION OF SGPT LEVELS OR MILD ECG CHANGES.A CAUSE-EFFECT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE LATTER CHANGES WAS NOT ESTABLISHED IN SOME DISTRICTS A SMALL NUMBER OF SUBJECTS WERE FOUND TO BE HYPOKALEMIC NO CHROMOSOMAL CHANGES WERE SEEN IN WBC OF 16 SUBJECTS TAKING GOSSYPOL. |
