| Disease | DAILY DOSING FOR 50 DAYS FOLLOWED BY A MAINTENANCE DOSE OF 40 MG PER WEEK. SEMEN ANALYSES WERE MADE ON 5 SUBJECTS BEFORE TREATMENT AS SELF-CONTROLS AND ON THE 30TH AND 50TH DAYS AFTER DRUG ADMINISTRATION. ANOTHER 7 SUBJECTS TAKING MAINTENANCE DOSES WERE EXAMINED ON THE 84TH DAY AFTER TREATMENT. SEMEN CENTRIFUGATION PRECIPITATES WERE FIXED,DEHYDRATED,EMBEDDED AND OBSERVED BY ELECTRON MICROSCOPY. THE SPIRAL SHEATH OF MITOCHONDRIA AND THE ACROSOMAL CAP WERE THE MOST SENSITIVE ORGANELLES RESPONDING TO GOSSYPOL.THEY WERE THE FIRST TO SHOW A DETECTABLE DAMAGE AND SUFFERED THE MOST SEVERE DAMAGE. THE AXIAL FILAMENTS AND NUCLEI ALSEO DEMONSTRATED DIFFERENT DEGREES OF ULTRASTRUCTURAL CHANGES. THE SEVERLY DAMAGED SPERMATOZOA FINALLY DISINTEGRATED.APPEARANCE OF CELL DIBRIS AND EXFOLIATED IMMATURE SPERMATOGENIC CELLS WERE EVIDENT. |
