DiseaseGOSSYPOL-ACETIC ACID WAS USED. DAILY DOSING FOR 12 WEEKS. AFTER TWO WEEKS DOSING THE MORPHOLOGY OF THE TESTES AND THE EPIDIDYMIS EXHIBITED NO CONSPICUOUS CHANGE AS SEEN UNDER A LIGHT MICROSCOPE. AFTER 2 WEEKS ADMINISTRATION,THE SPERM COUNT OF CAUDA EPIDIDYMIS WAS FOUND TO BE FLUCTUATING WITHIN NORMAL RANGE,EVEN THOUGH FERTILITY WAS LOST.THE MOTILITY OF THE SPERM IN THE TESTES WAS NOT MARKEDLY DIFFERENT BEFORE AND AFTER DRUG ADMINISTRATION. THE SPERM TAIL WAS ABLE TO WAVE SLOWLY IN RINGER'S SOLUTION, WHICH INDICATED THAT THE SPERM WAS STILL ALIVE. HOWEVER,AFTER TREATMENT THE MOTILITY OF THE SPERM BEGAN TO DECREASE GRADUALLY IN THE CAPUT EPIDIDYMIS AND THEN IN THE CAUDA EPIDIDYMIS. RECOVERY OF SPERM MOTILITY FOLLOWED THE SAME SEQUENCE: FIRST IN THE CAPUT AND THEN IN THE CAUDA. BESIDES, NUMEROUS SPERMATOZOA IN THE EPIDIDYMIS WERE FOUND TO BE DISRUPTED AFTER TREATMENT, MORE IN THE CAUDA THAN IN THE CAPUT. AFTER 7 WEEKS OF DOSING, FORMATION OF MULTINUCLEATED GIANT CELLS AND ASYNCHRONY OF CELLULAR ASSOCIATION WERE OBSERVED IN MOST OF THE SEMINIFEROUS TUBULES.IN SOME ANIMALS THE SPERMATIDS AND THE SPERMATOCYTES DISAPPEARED COMPLETELY. FERTILITY GRADUALLY RECOVERED AFTER 5-6 WEEKS. FOLLOWING WITHDRAWAL OF GOSSYPOL. THE AUTHORS STATE THAT THE MECHANISM OF ANTIFERTILITY ACTION MIGHT BE DIFFERENT WITH DIFFERENT DOSAGES OF MEDICATION AND DIFFERENT DURATIONS OF TREATMENT.
