TESTICULAR SPERM HEAD COUNTS,8 WEEKS AFTER TREATMENT,WERE ALSO USED AS AN ASSAY OF STEM CELL SURVIVAL SPERM PRODUCTION DECLINED AFTER CYTOTOXIC TREATMENT AND PARTIALLY RECOVERED TO A PLATEAU LEVEL.THE LEVEL OF RECOVERY IS CORRELATED WITH STEM CELL SURVIVAL. RESTORATION OF FERTILITY IS RELATED TO THE RECOVERY OF SPERM PRODUCTION UNDER THE CONDITIONS EMPLOYED IN THESE STUDIES, FERTILITY RETURNED WHEN SPERM PRODUCTION BY THE TESTIS REACHED CA. 10% OF CONTROL LEVELS. THE DURATION OF THE STERILE PERIOD WAS ALSO HIGHLY CORRELATED WITH STEM CELL SURVIVAL. APPARENTLY, SHORT-TERM ASSAYS THAT MEASURE SRUVIVAL OF STEM CELLS CAN BE USED TO PREDICT THE DURATION AND EXTENT OF STERLITY, REGARDLELL OF THE CYTOTOXIC AGENT USED. OTHER CYTOTOXIC CHALLENGES USED IN THE STUDY WERE RADIATION AND/OR THIO-TEPA. |
