| Disease | LIGHT AND ELECTRON MICROSCOPIC STUDIES OF THE TESTIS AND EPIDIDYMIS OF ANIMALS WHICH HAD BECOME INFERTILE AFTER TREATMENT WITH GOSSYPOL DAILY FOR 8-14 WEEKS. SPERMATOGENESIS WAS PARTIALLY INHIBITED.IN MOST OF THE SEMIINIFEROUS TUBULES THERE WAS STILL SPERMATOGENESIS. HOWEVER, THE AMOUNT OF GERM CELLS WAS DECREASED AND THE ARRANGEMENT OF GERM CELLS WAS DISORDERED. THE EARLIEST CHANGES WERE NOTED IN THE EARLY STAGE OF SPERMATID:REMARKABLE CHANGES OCCURRED IN THE MITOCHONDRIAL SHEATH OF THE MID-PIECE DUE TO VACUOLIZATION AND ABSENCE OF MITOCHONDRIA. EPIDIDYMAL SPERMATOZOA HAD BROKEN MEMBRANES, OUTER FIBERS OR INNER MICROTUBULES. EPIDIDYMAL EPITHELIUM SHOWED ULTRASTRUCTURAL CHANGES. IN SOME OF THE PRINCIPAL CELLS OF THE EUPIDIDYMAL DUCT THERE WERE LARGE AMOUNTS OF TRANSPARENT VESICLES AND DENSE BODIES. BECAUSE THESE VESICLES STILL HAD DOUBLE LIMITING MEMBRANES ANDCREASTAE-LIKE STRUCTURES,IT SEEMED TO BE A DEGENERATED MITOCHONDRIA. GOSSYPOL NOT ONLY AFFECTS TESTIS AND SPERMATOGENENSIS, IT ALSO DAMAGES THE EPIDIDYMAL EPITHELIUM. |
