DiseaseDAILY DOSING FOR 6 MONTHS PRODUCED SUPPRESSION OF SPERM PRODUCTION AND MOTILITY WITHOUT ANY SIGNIFICANT DECREASE IN PLASMA LEVELS OF TESTOSTERONE. A SUDDEN INCREASE IN SPERM COUNTS WAS OBSERVED AFTER ATTAININGAZOOSPERMIA,THOUGH THE SPERM MOTILITY REMAINED VERY SLUGGISH. SPERMATOZOA OBSERVED BY LIGHT MICROSCOPY SHOWED MORE SPERM WITH COILED OR BROKEN TAIL PIECES ND AN OCCASIONAL DETACHED HEAD AND TAIL,BUT NOT STRIKING ABNORMALITY. AT THE ULTRASTRUCTURAL LEVEL,DISRUPTION OF AXIAL COMPLEXES WASCOMMONLY OBSERVED WITH GOSSYPOL TREATMENT. THE ENTIRE AXIAL COMPLEX WAS FREQUENTLY DESTROYED, SUGGESTING ANIMAL=IMPAIRMENT OF SPERM MOTILITY. IN GENERAL,NO SERIOUS CLINICOPATHOLOGICAL FINDINGS WERE OBSERVEXPRESSION DOSE=IN ANY OF THE MONKEYS EXCEPT DIARRHEA AND LOSS OF APPETE INWTIAL STAGES OF DOSING. THESE EFFECTS WERE PROVED TEMPORARY AFTEER A BRIEF SUSPENSION OF TREATMENT. THE MEAN BODY WEIGHT OF THE ANIMALS DID NOT CHANGE. KIDNEY FUNCTION TEST AS EVALUATED BY BLOOD UREA NITROGEN AND SERUM CREATININE WHOWED NO IMPAIRMENT. THE HEMATOLOGICAL DATA REVEALED NORMAL HEMATOPOIESIS. SERUM PROTEINS WERE WITHIN NORMAL RANGE INDICATING THE NORMAL ACTIVITY OF CATABOLIC AND ANABOLIC HORMONES ON PROTEIN METABOLISM. THE STUDY SHOWED NO CHANGED IN PLASMA LEVELS OF SODIUM AND POTASSIUM, NOR IN BLOOD PRESSURE AMONG GOSSYPOL-TREATED ANIMALS.
