| Disease | EXPERIMENTS PERFORMED WITH EPIDIDYMAL LIGATURES AND ORAL ADMINISTRATION OF GOSSYPOL APPEARED TO DEMONSTRATE AN ABSENCE OF EFFECT ON EPIDIDYMAL SPERMATOZOA. BILATERAL INFILTRATION OF THE FAT PAD ADJACENT TO THE CAPUT EPIDIDYMIS WITH 0.1 ML OF SESAME OIL CONTAINING 100 MICROGRAMS OF GOSSYPOL(SIGMA CHEMICAL COMPANY) WAS CARRIED OUT. LIGATURES WERE PLACED UNILATERALLY AT THE PROXIMAL VAS DEFERENS ON THE RIGHT SIDE IN BOTH CONTROL AND TREATED ANIMALS. 24 HOURS LATER, SAMPLES OF SPERMATOZOA FROM TREATED AND CONTROL EPIDIDYMIDES WERE EXAMINED UNDER PHASE CONTRAST MICROSCOPY AND DARK ILLUMINATION. THE RESULTS INDICATED A SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN THE EPIDIDYMAL SPERM MOTILITY OF GOSSYPOL-TREATEDRATS. MOTILITY OF THE SPERM FROM TREATED LIGATED EPIDIDYMIDES WAS SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER THAN THAT OF NON-LIGATED. ULTRASTRUCTURAL EXAMINATION REVEALED AN APPARENT SWELLING IN THE MIDDLE PIECE OF MANY SPERMATOZOA FROM THE TREATED ANIMALS. MORPHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS CONFIRMED A 13% INCREASE IN CROSS-SECTIONAL DIAMETERS OF TREATED SPERMATOZOA. |
