| Disease | THIS PAPER REPORTS THE RESULTS OF OBSERVATION BY MEANS OF HISTOCHEMICAL,ELECTRON MICROSCOPIC,CYTOCHEMICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL TECHNIQUES DESIGNED TO INVESTIGATE THE EFFECT OF GOSSYPOL ON NA-K-ATPASE ACTIVITY IN RENAL TUBULES AND GASTROCNEMIUS MUSCLE. IT WAS SHOWN THAT INTENSIVE CYTOCHEMICAL REACTION OF NA-K-ATPASE ACTIVITY WAS OBSERVED IN GASTROCNEMIUS SARCOLEMMA,BASAL + INTERDIGITATING MEMBRANES OF DISTAL CONVOLUTED TUBULE, + CELL MEMBRANES OF THE THICK ASCENDING SEGMENT OF THE KIDNEY. SLIGHT POSITIVE REACTION COULD ALSO BE SEEN IN THE BASAL AND INFOLDING MEMBRANES OF THE EPITHELIAL CELLS OF COLLECTING AND PROXIMAL CONVOLUTED TUBULES. NO OBVIOUS CHANGES IN THE CYTOCHEMICAL REACTION OF NA-K-ATPASE ACTIVITY IN THE TREATED ANIMALS WERE OBSERVABLE AT 10,20 AND 30 MG/KG DAILY DOSE LEVELS(I.E. ANTIFERTILITY LEVEL). THE CYTOCHEMISTRY OF THE MEMBRANE NA-K-ATPASE AND THE MECHANISM OF GOSSYPOL INHIBITION OF ITS ACTIVITY WAS DISCUSSED. |
