| Disease | ANIMALS WERE DOSED ONCE DAILY FOR TWO DAYS WITH THE SMILAX EXTRACT PRIOR TO CHALLENGE WITH A TOXIC DOSE OF GOSSYPOL ON THE THIRD DAY. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY AN ADDITIONAL DOSE OF 650 MG/KG OF THE PLANT EXTRACT. THE DEATH RATES WERE RECORDED 3 DAYS AFTER GOSSYPOL ADMINISTRATION. DOSE IS EXPRESSED IN TERMS OF WEIGHT OF THE CRUDE DRUG EQUIVALENT REPRESENTED IN THE AMOUNT ADMINISTERED TO THE ANIMALS. AT THIS DOSE LEVEL 10/10 ANIMALS DIED, RELATIVE TO 20/20 DEATHS IN THE CONTROL GROUP THAT RECEIVED ONLY A TOXIC DOSE OF GOSSYPOL. DOSING WITH 8 MG/ANIMAL WITH FERROUS SULFATE SIGNIFICANTLY INHIBITED DEATHS IN GOSSYPOL-TREATED ANIMALS. |
