DiseaseGOSSYPOL WAS RELATIVELY STABLE IN ORGANIC SOLVENTS, SUCH AS ETHANOL AND DMSO. FRESHLY PREPARED GOSSYPOL IN 7 DIFFERENT SOLVENT SYSTEMS REVEALED ONE SINGLE YELLOW UV SPOT ON TLC. AN ADDITIONAL MINOR SPOT OF THE DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS APPEARED AFTER 1 WEEK OF STORAGE IN THE DARK, AT ROOM TEMPERATURE OF AT-20 C. GOSSYPOL IN 0.1 M CITRATE, PH 4.5, WAS RELATIVELY STABLE, WHEREAS IT WAS DECOMPOSED WITH TIME IN A NEUTRAL AQUEOUS SOLUTION(50 MILLIMOLS PHOSPHATE BUFFER,PH 7.0). FOUR MAJOR DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS WERE IDENTIFIED BY TLC WITH RF VALUES OF 0.54, 0.34, 0.27 AND 0.12. GOSSYPOL DECOMPOSED FASTER AT PH 8.5 THAN AT PH 7.0. IT WAS ALSO SHOWN THAT GOSSYPOL WAS DECOMPOSED INTO SIX MAJOR PRODUCTS AFTER 18 HOURS OF INCUBATION IN 0.05 M BICARBONATE SOLUTION, PH 8.5, WHEN ANALYZED BY HPLC.
