DiseaseLIGHT MICROSCOPE AND ELECTRON MICROSCOPE CHANGES WERE OBSERVED IN THE TESTIS AND EPIDIDYMIS OF ANIMALS THAT HAD BECOME INFERTILE AFTER TREATMENT WITH THE TITLE COMPOUND FOR 8-14 WEEKS. SPERMATOGENESIS WAS PARTIALLY INHIBITED. IN MOST OF SEMINFEROUS TUBULES SPERMATOGENSIS CONTINUED. HOWEVER,THE NUMBER OF GERM CELLS HAD DECREASED AND THE ARRANGEMENT OF GERM CELLS WAS DISORDERED.THE FIRST GOSSYPOL TREATMENT EFFECTS WERE IN THE EARLY SPERMATID STAGE. REMARKABLE CHANGES OCCURRED IN THE MITOCHONDRIAL SHEATH OF THE MIDPIECE DUE TO VACUOLIZATION AND MISSING MITOCHONDRIA. EPIDIDYMAL SPERMATOZOA HAD BROKEN MEMBRANES,OUTER FIBERS,OR INNER MICROTUBULES.CELLS OF EPIDIDYMAL EPITHELIUM SHOWED ULTRASTRUCTURAL CHANGES.IN SOME OF THE PRINCIPAL CELLS OF THE EPIDIDYMAL DUCT WERE MANY TRANSPARENT VESICLES & DENSE BODIES. BECAUSE THESE VESICLES STILL HAD A DOUBLE LIMITING MEMBRANE + CRISTAE-LIKE STRUCTURE,THEY SEEMED TO BE DEGENERATED MITOCHONDRIA.GOSSYPOL NOT ONLY AFFECTS TESTIS AND SPERMATOGENESIS, IT ALSO DAMAGES EPIDIDYMAL EPITHELIUM. IT IS A CYTOTOXIC AGENT.
