| Disease | DOSING 6 DAYS PER WEEK FOR 12 WEEKS.EPIDIDYMAL SPERM WERE 100% IMMOTILE AND LITTLE EVIDENCE BY LIGHT MICROSCOPY OF ABNORMALITY IN THE SEMINIFEROUS TUBULES OR INTERSTITIUM.IN CONTRAST,THERE WERE PATHOGNOMIC DEFECTS IN THE MITOCHONDRIAL SHEATH DEFECTS WERE ALSO SEEN IN THE AXONEMES OF STEP 18 AND 19 SPERMATIDS. IN ADDITION, AN ULTRASTRUCTURAL DEFECT IN THE FLAGELLA OF LATE TESTICULAR SPERMATOZOA IS DESCRIBED F OR THE FIRST TIME. THIS DEFECT CONSISTS OF AN INDENTATION, OR CONSTRICTION, OF THE MITOCHONDRIAL SHEATH AT OUTER DENSE FIBERS(ODF'S) 1,2 AND 9,RESULTING IN A SEPARATION OF THESE 3 ODF'S FROM THE OTHER FIBERS. RATS ALLOWED TO RECOVER FROM GOSSYPOL TREATMENT SHOWED NO ULTRASTRUCTURAL DEFECTS IN STEP 18 AND 19 SPERMATIDS AT 6 OR 12 WEEKS AFTER CESSATION OF TREATMENT AND SPERM MOTILITY DID NOT DIFFER SIGNIFICANTLY FROM CONTROLS BY THE END OF THE DOSING. |
