| Disease | OF 2,173 PATIENTS TREATED WITH COUMARIN, 17 DEVELOPED ELEVATED LIVER FUNCTION TESTS. 9 CASES WERE ATTRIBUTED TO EXTRANEOUS CAUSES INCLUDING INFECTIOUS HEPATITIS, COUMARIN-IBUPROFEN INTERACTION AND LIVER SECONDARIES IN CANCER PATIENTS. 8 CASES WERE ATTRIBUTED TO COUMARIN. THEY WERE CHARACTERIZED BY ELEVATED SERUM BILIRUBIN, TRANSAMINASES AND ALKALINE PHOSPHATASE. ENZYME LEVELS GENERALLY RETURNED TO NORMAL AFTER COUMARIN WAS STOPPED. 3 PATIENTS SHOWED LESSENING OF SYMPTOMS WHEN IMMUNOSUPPRESSIVE DRUGS WERE BEING USED, INDICATING THAT THE REACTION TO COUMARIN MAY BE IMMUNOLOGICALLY MEDIATED. |
