| Disease | ADMINISTRATION OF GOSSYPOL DAILY FOR 6 DAYS EACH WEEKS FOR 4 WEEKS CAUSED SWELLING AND VACOLATION OF MITOCHONDRIA IN SPIRAL SHEATHS OF LATE SPERMATIDS WITH NAKED AXIAL FILAMENT COMPLEXES. THE MITOCHONDRIA IN EARLY-AND MIDDLE-STATE SPERMATIDS AND PRIMARY SPERMATOCYTES WERE DECREASED, SWOLLEN AND VACUOLATED; THE ENDOPLASMIC RETICULA OF THESE CELLA WERE ALSO ENLARGED. THERE WERE ALSO SWELLING OF ACROSOMES AND CAPS WITH SOME CLEFTS, VACUOLATION OF EARLY GOLGIC COMPLEXES AND DEGENERATION OF ACROSOMAL GRANULES. IN SERTOLI CELLS, POLYMORPHIC MITOCHONDRIA, LIPID DROPLETS AND LYSOSOMES WERE INCREASED. ADMINISTRATION OF GOSSYPOL FOR 8 WEEKS CAUSED DAMAGE OF MITOCHONDRIA IN SOME SPERMATOGONIA AND DISSAPEARANCE OF MOST OF THE JUNCTIONAL COMPLEXES BETWEEN SEROLI CELLS. NO SIGNIFICANT ULTRASTRUCTURAL CHANGES WERE OBSERVED IN LEYDIG CELLS. |
