THUS, IT MAY BE CONCLUDED THAT IN THE RAT, GOSSYPOL MAY AFFECT THE K METABOLISM, AND THAT LOW-K INTAKE MAY BE A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR IN THE GOSSYPOL-INDUCED DISTURBANCE OF K METABOLISM. IN LOW-K FED RATS,SMALL DOSES OF GOSSYPOL DECREASE THE INTERCELLULAR MG ION CONCENTRACTION INTWO OF THE MUSCLES, AND LARGE DOSES DECREASE THE INTRACELLULAR K AND MG ION CONCENTRATIONS IN ALL OF THE FOUR MUSCLES. NEITHER DOSE SIGNIFICANTLY ALTERS THE SERUM K ION CONCENTRATION AND THE RENAL CONCENTRATING ABILITY. THESE FACTS SUGGEST THAT GOSSYPOL-INDUCED DISTURBANCE OF K METABOLISM MIGHT BE THE RESULT OF PERTURBED MG METABOLISM. LARGE DOSE GOSSYPOL MAY BRING ABOUT AN ATROPHIC CHANGE OF THE SKELETAL MUSCLE,AS EVIDENCED BY THE DECREASED MUSCLE WEIGHT, THE LOWERED URINARY CREATININE COEFFICIENT, AND THE DECREASED EXCHANGEABLE POTASSIUM PER UNIT OF BODY LENGTH. |
