DiseaseBRIEF PERFUSION WITH LOCKE'S SOLUTION INDUCES A SIGNIFICANT LOSS OF THE POTASSIUM CONTENT OF THE LEFT VENTRICULAR MYOCARDIUM,TOGETHER WITH A DRASTIC DEPRESSION OF ITS CONTRACTILITY. THE ACTIONS WERE REVERSED WHEN MG ION(2-4 MEQ/L) WERE ADDED TO MEDIUM. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE POTASSIUM-DEPLETING(AND NEGATIVE INOTROPIC EFFECT OF GOSSYPOL ON THE ISOLATED HEART MIGHT BE THE CONSEQUENCE OF ITS POSSIBLE INHIBITORY ACTION OF NA-K-ATPASE, THUS INTERFERING IN THE ACTIVE K+ TRANSPORT.
