| Disease | A CLINICAL STUDY OF 33 PTS WITH INSULIN-DEPENDENT DIABETES MELLITUS (IDDM) OF RECENT ONSET WERE DIVIDED RANDOMLY INTO TWO GROUPS. 17 CASES RECEIVED ADMINISTRATION OF INSULIN PLUS CYCLOSPORIN A (CSA) ON A DOSE OF 2.5-5.0 MG/KG/DAY FOR 3 TO 6 MO, THE OTHER CASES WERE TREAQTED WITH INSULIN ALONE. AT THE 3RD, 6TH AND 9TH MONTH 53.9%, 46.7% AND 40.0% OF THE CSA-TREATED GROUP AND 12.5%, 6.3%, 6.3% OF THE NON-CSA-TREATED GROUP WERE FOUND IN COMPLETE REMISSION RESP., THE EFFICIENCY OF REMISSION WAS RELATED TO THE DURATION OF THE DISEASE. GLUCOSE-STIMULATED C-PEPTIDE LEVELS OF THE CSA-TREATED GROUP WERE HIGHER THAN THAT OF NON-CSA-TREATED GROUP AT THE 6TH MONTH (P<0.05). OKT4/OKTS LYMPHOCYTE RATIOS OF THE CSA-TREATED GROUP DECLINED TO NORMAL. THE PRINCIPAL SIDE-EFFECT OF CSA WAS MODEST INCREASE IN PLASMA CREATININE LEVELS. THESE RESULTS SUGGEST THAT CSA MAY PROTECT THE ISLET BETA-CELL AND PROMOTE THE REMISSION OF IDDM. |
