| Disease | THE EFFECTS OF GINSENG ON CIRCULATORY, RESPIRATORY AND METABOLIC FUNCTION DURING MAXIMAL EXERCISE TESTS WAS INVESTIGATED IN A RANDOMISED, DOUBLE-BLIND, CROSS-OVER STUDY. IN 50 MALE SPORTS TEACHERS (21 TO 47 YEARS OF AGE) TOTAL WORK LOAD WAS SIGNIFICANTLY GREATER AFTER A GINSENG PREPARATION (17 880 KG.M) THAN AFTER PLACEBO (14 464 KG.M). ALSO, MAXIMAL OXYGEN UPTAKE WAS SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER FOLLOWING GINSENG USE (63 ML/KG/MIN) COMPARED WITH PLACEBO (59 ML/KG/MIN). AT THE SAME WORKLOA OXYGEN CONSUMPTION, PLASMA LACTATE LEVELS, VENTILATION, CARBON DIOXIDE PRODUCTION AND HEART RATE DRUING EXERCISE WERE ALSO SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER THAN THE PLACEBO CONDITION. THE EFFECTS OF GINSENG WERE MORE PRONOUNCED IN INDIVIDUALS WITH MAXIMAL OXYGEN CONSUMPTION BELOW 60 ML/KG/MIN OR ABOVE. THESE RESULTS WOULD INDICATE THAT THE GINSENG PREPARATION WAS EFFECTIVE IN INCREASING THE WORK CAPACITY OF THE STUDY PARTICIPANTS BY IMPROVING OXYGEN UTILISATION. |
