| Disease | THIS WAS A STUDY DESIGNED TO CLARIFY THE STATUS OF THE TITLE COMPOUND AS A CAUSATIVE AGENT OF NEPHRITIS. IN A TYPICAL EXPERIMENT A DOG WEIGHING 7 KG WAS GIVEN 13 MG OF CANTHARIDIN(IN ACETIC ACID) DAILY. THE URINE INCREASED IN AMOUNT ON THE SECOND DAY AND THEN DECREASED UNTIL THE FIFTH DAY, WITH INCREASE IN SPECIFIC GRAVITY. ALBUMIN WAS FOUND IN THE URINE DAILY. THE SEDIMENT CONTAINED RBC, EPITHELIAL CELLS AND HYALINE AND GRANULAR CASTS. ON THE FIFTH DAY PHYSIOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS WERE MADE OF THE RESPONSE OF THE KIDNEY TO VARIOUS STIMULI. THE DATA SHOWED THAT THE MOST STRIKING EFFECT OF CANTHARIDIN WAS INJURY OF THE BLOOD VESSELS. THE GREAT NUMBER OF MITOTIC FIGURES IN THE TUBULAR EPITHELIUM IN THE STAGE OF REPAIR POINTED OUT AN EQUALLY WIDESPREAD AND SEVERE EPITHELIAL INJURY. IT WAS CONCLUDED THT DISTURBANCES OF KIDNEY FUNCTION CAUSED BY CANTHARIDIN MAY NOT BE EXCLUSIVELY DUE TO VASCULAR INJURY. |
