DiseaseTHE MATERIAL TESTED WAS IN THE FORM OF THE COMMERCIAL PRODUCT ECHINACIN. UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF LEUKOCYTIC ENZYMES,HETEROGENEOUS AND HOMOGENEOUS FIBRIN GRAFTS ARE TRANSFORMED VIA AMINO ACIDS INTO COMPONENTS OF THE CONNECTIVE TISSUE SUBSTANCE. THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE BASIC SUBSTANCE INTO CONNECTIVE TISSUE WAS STIMULATED BY A TOTAL EXTRACT OF THE TITLE PLANT. COMPARED WITH PURE FIBRIN GRAFTS,INCREASED HEALING TENDENCY OF THE WOUND AREAS AND LESS MARKED LEUKOCYTIC INFILTRATION WAS OBSERVED IN ECHINACIN-FIBRIN GRAFTS. YOUNG FIBROCYTES APPEAR MORE RAPIDLY AND ON A LARGER SCALE THAN IN PURE FIBRIN GRAFTS. THESE DIFFERENCES IN TISSUE FORMATION APPEAR TO BE DUE TO THE ANTIHYALURONIDASE ACTION OF THE EXTRACT. ECHINACIN APPEARS TO DEVELOP PROTECTIVE ACTION TOWARD THE MESENCHYMAL MUCOPOLYSACCHARIDES PRODUCED BY THE FIBROCYTES. LARGER QUANTITIES OF THESE MUCOPOLYSACCHARIDES ARE FOUND IN ECHINACIN-FIBRIN GRAFTS. IN PURE FIBRIN GRAFTS,ONLY NEGLIGIBLE AMOUNTS ARE DETERMINED HISTIOCHEMICALLY. THE ENZYMATIC BREAKDOWN OF FIBRIN PROVIDES BASIC MATERIAL FOR THE SYNTHESIS OF CONNECTIVE TISSUE SUBSTANCE. MUCOPOLYSACCHARIDES ARE TRANSFORMED INTO CONNECTIVE TISSUE BY THE YOUNG FIBROBLASTS,THE FORMATION OF WHICH,IN TURN,IS STIMULATED BY ECHINACIN.
