THE TENSILE STRENGTH OF HEALING OF FRACTURED BONES WAS MEASURED BY THE TENSITOMETER AND THE RATE OF CALCIUM DEPOSIT IN THE CALLUS WAS MEASURED BY USE OF 45-CA. THE EXTRACT HAD A DEFINITE BENEFICIAL EFFECT. THE INCREASE IN TENSILE STRENGTH IN TREATED ANIMALS CORRELATED WITH AN INCREASE IN THE COMPONENTS OF THE BONE,SUCH AS MUCOPOLYSACCHARIDES,COLLAGEN,CA AND P. THERE WAS A 90% GAIN IN NORMAL STRENGTH AT THE END OF 6 WEEKS COMPARED WITH 60% GAIN IN CONTROLS. THE 45-CA UPTAKE STUDIES INDICATED EARLIER COMPLETION OF CALCIFICATION AND EARLIER REMODELING PHENOMENA. |
