| Disease | A PREVIOUS STUDY HAS DEMONSTRATED THE PRESENCE OF SEVERAL IMMUNOREACTIVE REGULATORY PEPTIDES IN EXTRACTS OF DRIED GINSENG ROOT POWDER, AND INSULINOTROPIC ACTIVITY IN THE VASOACTIVE INTESTINAL POLYPEPTIDE (VIP)-LIKE IMMUNNMOREACTIVITY-CONTAINING FRACTION OF THIS EXTRACT. IN THE PRESENT PAPER, FRESH GINSENG ROOT WAS EXTRACTED WITH DILUTE ACETIC ACID, AND THE EXTRACTS WERE SUBJECTED TO GEL FILTRATION. GEL FILTRATION REVEALED THE PRESENCE OF HIGH AND LOW MOLECULAR FORMS OF VIP-LIKE IMMUNOREACTIVITY. BOTH FRACTIONS ALSO CONTAINED IMMUNOREACTIVE NEUROPEPTIDES SUCH AS PEPTIDE HI(PHI), GALANIN, NEUROPEPTIDE Y(NPY) AND GLUCAGON-LIKE PEPTIDE-I(GLP-I). OF THESE PEPTIDES, GALANIN-LIKE IMMUNOREACTIVTY SHOWED THE HIGHEST CONCENTRATION. FRACTIONS CONTAINING VIP-LIKE IMMUNOREACTIVITY WERE PARTIALLY PURIFIED BY ION EXCHANGE CHROMATOGRAPHY ON A Q-SEPHAROSE COLUMN TO GIVE TWO VIP-LIKE IMMUNOREACTIVE PEAKS, WHICH ELUTED AT 0.6 AND 0.7 M NACL IN A GRADIENT OF NACL. |
