DiseaseTHE EFFECTS OF TOTAL GLUCOSIDE OF PEONY, PAEONIFLORIN AND TOTAL GLUCOSIDE OF PEONY WITH REMOVAL OF PAEONIFLORIN ON THE ADJUVANT ARTHRITIS WERE INVESTIGATED IN RATS. ON THE 18TH DAY AFTER FREUND'S COMPLETE ADJUVANT INJECTION, CON A-INDUCED SPLENIC LYMPHOCYTE PROLIFERATION IN RATS WAS SUPPRESSED MARKEDLY, AND PERITONEAL MACROPHAGES FROM ARTHRITIC RATS INDUCED BY LIPOPOLYSACCHARIDE PRODUCED INTERLEUKIN 1 WERE MUCH MORE THAN THAT IN CONTROL GROUP. TOTAL GLUCOSIDE OF PEONY, PAEONIFLORIN (0.5-312.5 MG/L) POSSESSED THE PROMOTING EFFECT ON THE SPLENIC LYMPHOCYTE PROLIFERATION AND THE INHIBITORY EFFECT ON INTERLEUKIN 1 PRODUCTION. THE IMMUNOREGULATORY ACTION OF TOTAL GLUCOSIDE OF PEONY ON ADJUVANT ARTHRITIC RATS WERE MORE POTENT THAN THAT OF PAEONIFLORIN AT THE SAME CONCENTRATION. THE RESULTS SUGGESTED THAT TOTAL GLUCOSIDE OF PEONY, PAEONIFLORIN AND TOTAL GLUCOSIDE OF PEONY WITHOUT PAEONIFLORIN POSSESS A DUAL IMMUNOMODULATORY EFFECT ON THE SPLENIC LYMPHOCYTE PROLIFERATION AND INTERLEUKIN 1 PRODUCTION BY MACROPHAGES FROM ADJUVANT ARTHRITIC RATS, DEPENDING UPON THEIR CONCENTRATION AND THE FUNCTIONAL STATE OF THE ANIMALS.
