| Disease | CROSS SECTIONAL, UNCONTROLLED STUDY OF 107 DIABETIC OUTPATIENTS WAS CONDUCTED TO ASSESS THE INFLUENCE OF ALPHA-LIPOIC ACID ON MARKERS OF OXIDATIVE STRESS ASSESSMENT MEASURED BY PLASMA LIPID HYDROPEROXIDES, AND ON THE BALANCE BETWEEN OXIDATIVE STRESS AND ANTIOXIDANT DEFENSE, DETERMINED BY THE RATIO OF ROOH(ALPHA-TOCOPHECOL/CHOLESTEROL). PATIENTS RECEIVING ALPHA-LIPOIC ACID HAD SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER ROOHS AND RATIO THAN THOSE WITH TREATMENT. PATIENTS WERE SUBDIVIDED INTO 3 GROUPS BASED ON THEIR HBA LEVELS AND THEIR URINARY ALBUMIN CONCENTRATIONS. NEITHER POOR GLYCEMIC CONTROL, NOR THE PRESENCE OF MICRO-OR MACROALBUMINEMIA PREVENTED THE ANTIOXIDANT EFFECT OF ALPHA-LIPOIC ACID. THE DATA PROVED THAT THE TREATMENT WITH ALPHA-LOPOIC ACID IMPROVES SIGNIFICANTLY THE IMBALANCE BETWEEN INCREASED OXIDATIVE STRESS AND ANTIOXIDENT DEFENSE IN PATIENTS WITH POOR GLYCEMIC CONTROL AND LABUMINEMIA. |
