| Disease | A RANDOMISED PLACEBO-CONTROLLED DOUBLE-BLIND CROSSOVER DESIGN WAS EMPLOYED IN THIS INVESTIGATION. IN THE SINGLE DOSE TRIALS THE SUBJECTS TOOK 6 SUGAR-COATED TABLETS OF POWDERED GARLIC OR PLACEBO ORALLY TOGETHER WITH 500 ML OF UNSWEETENED TEA. EACH TABLET CONTAINED 100 MG OF POWDERED GARLIC OR A SIMILAR-LOOKING PLACEBO. SUBJECTS TOOK ONE GARLIC TABLET AND FIVE PLACEBO TABLETS IN THE 100 MG GROUP, THREE GARLIC TABLETS AND THREE PLACEBO TABLETS IN THE 300 MG GROUP, OR SIX GARLIC TABLETS IN THE 600 MG GROUP. THEREFORE, EACH SUBJECT ALWAYS TOOK SIX SUGAR-COATED TABLETS. BEFORE INGESTION AND 5 HOURS AFTER INGESTION, THE FLUIDITY OF BLOOD, PACKED-CELL VOLUME, PLASMA VISCOSITY, ERYTHROCYTE AGGREGATION, ERYTHROCYTE RIGIDITY AND SPONTANEOUS AGGREGATION WERE MEASURED. TISSUE PLASMINOGEN ACTIVATION (TPA) AND PLASMINOGEN ACTIVATOR INHIBITOR (PAI) WERE MEASURED AS WAS THE CONCENTRATION OF FIBRINOGEN. THE HIGHER THE DOSE (AT 600 MG) THE STRONGER THE EFFECT WAS. THE DATA DID NOT CLEARLY STATE WHETHER THE EFFECT OF GARLIC ON FIBRINOLYTIC ACTIVITY IS CLINICALLY RELEVANT. |
