| Disease | A GROUP OF 20 ATHLETES WERE RANDOMLY ASSIGNED TO GROUP A AND GROUP B. THE STUDY WAS DOUBLE BLIND AND PLACEBO CONTROLLED WITH 8 IN A GROUP(PLACEBO), 9 IN B GROUP (ACTIVE B-SITOSTEROL(BSS) AND B-SITOSTEROL GLUCOSIDE (BSSG)). THE VOLUNTEERS WERE GIVEN CAPSULES CONTAINING THE BSS/BSSG MIXTURE (2 CAPSULES TO BE TAKEN 3X A DAY), EACH CAPSULE CONTAINING 10 MG BSS, 0.1 MG BSSG ON 100 MG TALCUM OR PLACEBO. BLOOD SAMPLES WERE DRAWN BEFORE EVENT AND 3 DAYS AFTER EVENT(MARATHON). CIRCULATING LYMPHOCYTES WERE DETERMINED AND CLOTTED BLOODS WERE ASSAYED. ALSO GROUP B AFTER MARATHON SHOWED THAT THE INTAKE OF BSSG/BSS INHIBITED THE RELEASE OF THE PROINFLAMMATORY MONOKINE(ILG) AND THE HORMONES WERE MORE BALANCED IN B GROUP THAN A GROUP. BSS:BSSG SHOWED LESS OF AN INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE IN TREATED GROUP AND LESS IMMUNOSUPPRESSION DURING THE POST-MARATHON RECOVERY PEROID. |
