| Disease | FATALITY RATES FROM A.PHALLOIDES AMONG PERSONS GIVEN VARIOUS MEDICAL TREATMENTS, EXCLUDING SILYMARIN, RANGE FROM 22% TO 40% IN ADULTS AND ARE EVEN HIGHER IN CHILDREN. IN A RETRSPECTIVE STUDY IN 18 PATIENTS WITH A.PHALLOIDES POISONING, A CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WAS FOUND BETWEEN THE SEVERITY OF LIVE INJURY AND THE TIME FROM MUSHROOM INGESTION TO THE STRAT OF SILYBIN TREATMENT, THE SHORTER THE INTERVAL FROM INGESTION TO TREATMENT, THE LESS SEVERE THE INJURY. SILYBIN WAS GIVEN BY INFUSION AT A MEAN DOSAGE OF 33 MG/KG/DAY AND FOR A MEAN DURATION OF 81.6 HOURS. ALL PATIENTS IN THE STUDY SURVIVED, EXCEPT FOR ONE PATIENT WHO TOOK A HIGH DOSE WITH SUICIDAL INTENTION. OTHER THERAPIES, INCLUDING SUPPORTIVE MEASURES AND PENICILLIN, WERE NOT CORRELATED WITH AN ATENUATION OF THE SEVERITY OF LIVER DAMAGE, EVEN WHEN STARTED BEFOR ESILYBIN. THE AUTHORS CONCLUDED THAT ADMINISTRATION OF SILYBIN UP TO 48 HOURS AFTER A.PHALLOIDES INGESTIOON SEEMED TO BE EFFECTIVE IN PREVENTING SEVERE LIVER DAMAGE. |
