| Disease | ONLY A FEW SIDE-EFFECTS HAVE BEEN REPORTED, INCLUDING THE OCCURRENCE OF ALLERGIC REACTIONS. FATIGUE, RESTLESSNESS, DRY MOUTH, AND GASTROINTESTIAAL SYMPTOMS. MOST OF THESE SIDE-EFFECTS ARE DOSE-DEPENDENT AND OCCUR ONLY IN ABOUT 10% OF THE POPULATION. MILD INSOMNIA HAS ALSO BEEN REPORTED WITH HIGH DOSES OF THE DRUG, ESPECIALLY IN THE ELDERLY, AND CAN BE PREVENTED BY TAKING THE LAST DOSE EARLIER IN THE DAY. TOXIC EFFECTS IN SHEEP AND OTHER GRAZING ANIMALS HAVE BEEN SEEN IN THE FORM OF FACIAL EDEMA AND PHOTOSENSITIZATION. HOWEV ER, PHOTOTOXICITY REPORTEDLY OCCURS IN HUMANS ONLY AFTER THE INGESTION OF LARGE DOSES, ABOUT 30 TO 50 TIMES HIGHER THAN RECOMMENDED THERAPEUTIC DOSES. THERE HAVE BEEN NO ADVERSE REACTIONS NOTED WHEN THE DRUG IS GIVEN WITH ALCOHOL. IN FACT, ONE STUDY SHOWED THAT PATIENTS ON CONCOMITANT HYPERICIN AND ALCOHOL ACTUALLY HAD A SLIGHTLY INCREASED ABILITY TO DRIVE A CAR. |
