DiseasePRELIMINARY DATA FROM A CONTROLLED STUDY IN HUMANS PERFORMED IN , INDICATED THAT PYC IS BIOAVAILABLE IN HUMANS. AFTER A 48-H WASH-OUT PERIOD, DURING WHICH 8 ADULTS SUBJECTS ABSTAINED FROM THE INGESTION OF ANY KIND OF PHENOLICS, A SINGLE DOSE OF 200 MG OF PYC WAS ORALLY ADMINISTERED. URINE WAS COLLECTED FOR THE NEST 24 H AND ANALYZED FOR THE PRESENCE OF PHENOLIC COMPOUNDS BY HPLC. THE URINE OF ALL SUBJECTS CONTAINED FERULIC ACID, WHICH IS A COMPONENT OF PYC, AND OTHER HYDROXYCINNAMIC ESTERS, WITH A MAXIMUM PEAK OF EXCRETION AT ABOUT 18 H AFTER INGESTION, AS SHOWN IN FIG. 2. THE TOTAL CUMULATIVE EXCREETION OF HYDROXYCINNAMIC ACIDS RANGED BETWEEN 1 AND 4 MG OVER 24 H, I.E., ABOUT 1% OF THE TOTAL DOSE OF PYC ADMINISTERED. THESE DATA INDICATED THAT PYC CAN BE CONSIDERED HIGHLY BIOAVAILABLE IN HUMANS, AT LEAST IN TERMS OF ITS COMMPONENT FERULIC ACID.
