| Disease | GRAPE SEED PROCYANIDINS OBTAINED FROM PLANTS GROWN IN A C-ENRICHED ENVIRONMENT HAVE BEEN USED TO STUDY THE BIOAVAILABILITY IN VIVO. THE PRESENCE OF THE PROCYANIDIN-B3 IN HUMAN URINE HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED AFTER PYC ADMINISTRATION. HOWEVER, THE SAME STUDY REPORTED THAT THE ADMINISTRATION OF PURIFIED DIMERIC PROCYANIDINS (B1 AND B3) IS NOT FOLLOWED BY THE APPEARANCE OF THE CORRESPONDING CHROMATOGRAPHIC PEAKS IN URINE, AND THAT THE NEW CHROMATOGRFAPHIC PROFILE FOUND IN URINE FOLLOWING INGESTION OF PYC DOES NOT MATCH THAT OF THE PYC[26]. THESE OBSERVATIONS INDICATE THAT MODIFICATION OF FLAVONOIDS OCCURS DURING DIGESTION AND ABSORPTION AND THAT COMPOUNDS EXERTING AN EFFECT IN VIVO MAY BE DIFFERENT FROM THOSE COMPOSING THE RAW EXTRACT. |
