| Disease | A PROTECTIVE ACTIVITY HAS ALSO BEEN REPORTED FOR THE EYE. WHICH IS CONSTANTLY EXPOSED TO PHOTO-OXIDATIVE STRESS. PYC, IN CONCENTRATIONS AS LOW AS 2.5 MCG/ML, WAS FOUND TO PROTECT BOTH PURIFIED ROD OUTER SEGMENTS AND THE PIGMENT EPITHELIUM OF THE RETINA FROM LIPID PEROXIDATION INDUCED IN VITRO BY IRON. NOT SURPRISINGLY, ASCORBATE DID NOT PROTECT AGAINST SUCH IRON-DRIVEN LIPID PEROXIDATION, WHAREAS FLAVONOIDS RELATED TO PYC COMPONENTS. SUCH AS THE GALLIC ESTER OF CATECHIN, ENHANCED THE PROTECTIVE EFFECT OF ALPHA-TOCOPHEROL IN CONCENTRATIONS ON THE ORDER OF 50 MCG/ML. THE NATURE OF THE INHIBITORY ACTIVITY REPORTED IN THIS STUDY WAS NOT INVESTIGATED AND THEREFORE IT IS NOT CLEAR IF PYC AND OTHER TESTED COMPOUNDS REDUCED LIPID PEROXIDATION OWING THEIR FREE RADICAL-QUENCHING ABILITY OR BY CHELATING FERRIC IONS, OR BOTH. |
