| Disease | VINPOCETINE IS A HIGHLY POTENT VASODILATOR, ACTING BY DIRECT RELAXATION OF THE VASCULAR SMOOTH MUSCLE. VINPOCETINE ENHANCES CEREBRAL BLOOD FLOW IN PATIENTS WITH CEREBROVASCULAR DISORDERS. PATIENTS FROM THIS POPULATION WHO ALSO MANIFEST INCREASED BLOOD VISCOSITY ARE AT GREATER RISK FOR THROMBOTIC COMPLICATIONS. IN ONE SUCH GROUP OF PATIENTS, VINPOCEETINE HAD A VISCOSITY-LOWING EFFECT ON THE BLOOD AND PLASMA. VINPOCETINE IS KNOWN TO DECREASE PLATELET AND RED CELL AGGREGATION, AND TO INCREASE RED CELL MEMBRANE FLEXIBILITY IN STROKE PATIENTS, AS WELL AS IN HEALTHY SUBJECTS. ANY OR ALL OF THESE MECHANISMS COULD BE INVOLVED IN VINPOCETINE'S CAPACITY TO LOWER THE VISCOSITY OF BLOOD IN VIVO. |
