DiseaseTO ASSESS THE HYPOGLYCAEMIC EFFECT OF PONGAMIA PINNATA (SUKHCHAIN) FLOWERS, A GROUP OF VOLUNTEER NORMAL PERSONS AND THREE GROUPS OF OUT PATIENTS SUFFERING FROM NON-INSULIN DEPENDENT DIABETES MELLITUS (NIDDM) WERE STUDIED. GROUP 1 (6 NORMAL PERSONS) INGESTED 5 GRAMS OF POWDERED SUKHCHAIN FLOWERS WITH 200 ML OF TAP WATER. GROUPS 2-4 COMPRISED 6 NIDDM PATIENTS EACH. THEY RECEIVED 3,4 AND 5 GRAMS OF POWDERED SUKHCHAIN FLOWERS, RESPECTIVELY. THEIR BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVELS WERE DETERMINED AT 1,2 AND 3 HRS INTERVALS. AFTER THE INTAKE OF SUKHCHAIN POWDER, BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVELS OF THE NORMALS WERE SIGNIFICANTLY DECREASED (P<0.05 OR 0.001) FROM THE ZERO MINUTE AT 1,2 AND 3 HRS. IN NIDDM PATIENTS, TREATMENT WITH 4 AND 5 G OF THE POWDER (GROUPS 2 TO 4) PRODUCED A DOSE DEPENDENT DECREASE IN THE BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVELS OF THE DIABETIC PATIENTS (P>0.05 AND 0.001). THE MEAN REDUCTION OF GLUCOSE REACHED 22.5+2.3% OF BASAL VALUES AT 3 HRS IN GROUP 1 WHILE IT WAS 13.1+/-2.1, 35.8 +/-2.8 AND 47.2 +/-3.8 IN THE GROUPS 2,3 AND 4, RESPECTIVELY. THIS STUDY HAS SHOWN THAT THE FLOWERS OF P.PINNATA (SUKHCHAIN) CAUSEA A CONSISTENT HYPOGLYCAEMIC EFFECT IN PATIENTS WITH NIDDM. THE MECHANISM OF THIS EFFECT IN PATIENTS WITH NIDDM. THE MECHANISM OF THIS EFFECT HAS BEEN CONCEIVED TO BE DUE TO INCREASED INSULIN SECRETION AS WELL AS DIRECT INSULIN-LIKE ACTION.
