| Disease | THIS 13-WEEK CROSSOVER STUDY WAS DONE TO ASSESS THE LIPID-LOWERING PROPERTIES AND GASTROINTESTINAL EFFECTS OF A SPREAD CONTAINING PLANT STANOL ESTERS IN HEALTHY 2- TO 5-YEAR-OLD PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN. FOLLOWING A 1-WEEK LEAD-IN, 19 ELIGIBLE CHILDREN RANDOMLY RECEIVED A STANOL ESTER SPREAD (3 G.DAY-1 STANOLS) OR WHEAT BRAN FIBRE 95 G.DAY-1 FOR 2 WEEKS THAN 10 G. DAY-1 FOR 2 WEEKS) FOR 4 WEEKS, FOLLOWED BY A 2-WEEK WASHOUT: CHILDREN THAN CROSSED OVER TO THE OTHER PHASE. IN THE WHOLE STUDY GROUP, STANOL ESTER SPREAD SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED TOTAL CHOLESTEROL LEVELS (-19.9 MG.DL-1 [0.5 MMOL.1-1]. -12.4% VS BASELINE: P<0.02). BRAN FIBRE REDUCED TOTAL CHOLESTEROL BY 6.1 MG.DL-1 (0.2 MMOL.1-1) AND LDL CHOLESTEROL BY 3.3 MG.DL-1 (0.1 MMOL.1-1)(NEITHER SIGNIFICANT). NO SIGNIFICANT CHANGES OCCURRED IN HIGH-DENSITY LIPOPROTEIN CHOLESTEROL OR TRIGLYCERIDE LEVELS. CONSUMPTION OF STANOL ESTERS WAS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ANY SHORT-TERM ADVERSE EFFECTS. STANOL ESTER COULD FORM THE BASIS FOR DEVELOPMENT OF HIGHLY PALATABLE AND EFFECTIVE CHOLESTEROL-LOWERING FOOD PRODUCTS THAT MAY SAFELY BE USED IN CHILDHOOD. |
