Disease79 SUBJECTS WITH MILD HYPERCHOLESTEROLAEMIA WERE RANDOMIZED TO CONSUME 8 G OF A SPREAD, 3 TIMES A DAY, FOR 8 WEEKS: A EUROPEAN SPREAD CONTAINING 1 G STANOLS (EU 1 G), A REFORMULATED SPREAD CONTAINING 1 G STANOLS (US 1 G), A REFORMULATED SPREAD CONTAINING 0.67 G STANOLS (US 0.67 G) OR PLACEBO SPREAD (CONTROL). MEAN BASELINE SERUM TOTAL AND LOW-DENSITY LIPOPROTEIN(LDL) CHOLESTEROL LEVELS WERE 232 MG. D1-1 (6 MMOL.1-1) AND 153 MG.D1-1 (4 MMOL.1-1), RESPECTIVELY. AFTER 8 WEEKS, REDUCTIONS IN TOTAL CHOLESTEROL IN THE EU 1 G, US 1 G AND US 0.67 G GROUPS WERE 17 MG. D1-1 (0.44 MMOL.1-1; -7%), 22 MG.D1-1 (0.57 MMOL.1-1; -9%) AND -14 MG.D1-1 (0.36 MMOL.1-1; -6%), RESPECTIVELY (ALL P<0.01 VESUS CONTROL). CORRESPONDING REDUCTIONS IN LDL CHOLESTEROL WERE 14 MG.D1-1 (0.36 MMOL.1-1; -9%), -22 MG.D1-1 (0.57 MMOL,1-1; -14%) AND 13 MG.D1-1 (0.34 MMOL.1-1; -8%), RESPECTIVELY (ALL P<0.001 VERSUS CONTROL). CHANGES IN TOTAL AND LDL CHOLESTEROL IN THE CONTROL GROUP WERE -2 MG.D1-1 AND O MG.D1-1, RESPECTIVELY. TRIGLYCERIDES AND HIGH-DENSITY LIPOPROTEIN (HDL) CHOLESTROL WERE UNCHANGED. THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF TOXICITY OR VITAMIN MALABSORPTION. PLANT STANOLS DECREASED SERUM LEVELS OF CAMPESTEROL AND SITOSTEROL BY AS MUCH AS 53%. SPREADS FORTIFIED WITH PLANT STANOL ESTERS SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER TOTAL AND LDL CHOLESTEROL IN MILDLY HYPERCHOLESTEROLAEMIC U.S.A. MEN AND WOMEN WITHOUT LOWERING HDL CHOLESTEROL.
