| Disease | A RESPIRATORY HEALTH SURVEY WAS CONDUCTED IN 10 LENTIL MILLS IN GAZIANTEP AND THE EFFECTS OF THE LENTIL DUST EXPOSURE ON THE AIRWAYS OF WORKERS WERE EXAMINED. PHYSICAL EXAMINATIONS AND PULMONARY FUNCTION TESTS WERE PERFORMED ON 66 LENTIL WORKERS BEFORE AND AFTER THE 6 HOURS INTERVAL OF WORKING PERIOD. A QUESTIONNAIRE RECOMMENDED BY THE AMERICAN THORACIC SOCIETY(ATS) WAS ADMINISTERED FOR EACH SUBJECT. DUST CONCENTRATION MEASURED IN DIFFERENT PLACES WAS RECORDED BETWEEN 2.34-129.6MG/M3/H. THE SMOKERS AMONG LENTIL MILL WORKERS HAD SINGIFICANTLY HIGHER INCIDENCE OF REGULAR COUGH(74%), EXPECTORATION(56%), WHEEZE(32.6%), AND DYSPNOEA(41%) THAN NON-SMOKER LENTIL MILL WORKERS. THESE SYMPTOMS WERE MORE PREVALENT DURING THE WORKING PERIOD. IN ADDITION 21% OF LENTIL MILL WORKERS HAD ATOPIC SYMPTOMS INCLUDING 16.6% NASAL SYMPTOMS, 15.1% WATERY EYES, 10% SKIN RASHES. IN SMOKER LENTIL MILL WORKERS,PRE-SHIFT VALUES OF FORCED EXPIRATORY VOLUME IN 1ST SECOND(FEV1) AND MEAN FORCED EXPIRATORY FLOW DURING THE MIDDLE HALF OF THE FVC(FEF 25-27%) WERE SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER THAN PREDICTED VALUES OF THOSE TESTS. COMPARED WITH PRE-SHIFT VALUES, POST-SHIFT VALUES OF FVC AND FEV1 WERE SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER. IN THE GROUP OF NON- SMOKER LENTIL MILL WORKERS, THERE WAS A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE ONLY BETWEEN POST-SHIFT VALUES AND PRE-SHIFT VALUES OF FVC AND FEV1, WE CONCLUDE THAT EXPOSURE OF LENTIL DUST MAY CAUSE ACUTE OR CHRONIC AIRWAY OBSTRUCTION AND THIS EFFECT IS MORE PREVALENT AMONG SMOKERS. |
