DiseaseTO DEFINE POSSIBLE EFFECTS OF D,L-KAWAIN, THREE CLINICAL STUDIES WERE CARRIED OUT. IN THE OPEN STUDY A AND THE DOUBLE-BLIND RANDOMIZED STUDY B1, 10 AND 30 PATIENTS, RESPECTIVELY, WITH VEGETATIVE DISORDERS RECEIVED A TOTAL OF 6 X 200 MG D,L- KAWAIN ORALLY ON THREE CONSECUTIVE DAYS. THE METHODS ENTAILED SIX PSYCHOMETRIC TESTS AND THE EEG (INTERVAL ANALYSIS). PSYCHOMETRIC LEARNING EFFECTS AND THE VIGILANCE LEVEL REMAINED UNCHANGED, SHORT-TERM MEMORY WAS IMPROVED. X-CENTROIDS OF THE EEG INDICATED A TENDENCY TOWARDS AN INCREASE IN FREQUENCY. BLOOD CHEMISTRY AND HEMATOLOGY SHOWED NO DEVIATIONS. 60 PATIENTS WITH PULMONARY INFILTRATES WHICH WERE EITHER TUBERCULOUS OR WAITING FOR DIAGNOSIS PARTICIPATED IN STUDY C. IN THIS TRIAL. THE "HAMILTON DEPRESSION SCALE" WAS EMPLOYED BEFORE AND AFTER A 12-DAY ADMINISTRATION OF EITHER 3 X 200 MG D,L-KAWAIN OR PLACEBO. D,L-KAWAIN PROVED TO BE ANXIOLYTIC (P<0.005) AND, ADDITIONALLY, COUNTERACTED PHENOMENA OF "DEPRESSIVE INHIBITION". THE RESULTS OF THE THREE STUDIES CONCUR WITH FINDINGS REACHED IN PREVIOUS CONTROLLED INVESTIGATIONS.
