DiseaseTWENTY H. PYLORI-POSITIVE DYSPEPTIC PATIENTS (15 FEMALE, AGED BETWEEN 21 AND 61 YR) WITH ENDOSCOPIC ERYTHEMATEOUS GASTRITIS AND/OR BULBITIS WERE INDUCED IN THE STUDY. PATIENTS WERE RANDOMIZED TO RECEIVE EITHER GARLIC OIL 275 MG CAPSULES, WHICH CONTAINS 800 UG ALLICIN, T.I.D. (N=10) OR GARLIC OIL CPAS. T.I.D. PLUS OMEPRAZOLE 20 MG CAPS B.I.D. (N=10) DYSPEPTIC SYMPTOMS (EPIGASTRIC PAIN, HEARTBURN, NAUSES, BURPING, AND METEORISM) WERE ALSO SCORED NUMBERICALLY FROM 0 TO 4, WHERE 0 INDICATES ABSENCE OF THE SYMPTOMS AND 4 SEVERE AND INCAPACITING SYMPTOMS. ALL CASES WER EREASSESSED 1 MONTH AFTER THE END OF TREATMENT. H. PYLORI ERADICATION WAS ASSUMED IF BOTH HISTOOLOGY AND UREASE TEST WERE NEGATIVE FOR H. PYLORI. ALTHOUGH IT HAS SHOWN THAT GARLIC EXTRACTS HAVE A BROAD ACTION UPON ALMOST ALL KINDS OF BACTERIA (3), THIS CLINICAL STUDY SHOWED NO EFFECT OF GARLIC OIL ON H. PYLORI INFECTION. TOGETHER WITH THE STUDY BY GRAHAM ET AL., IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT NEITHER FRESH GARLIC NOR GARLIC OIL CAPSULES HAVE ANY THERAPEUTIC EFFECT ON H.PYLORI INFECTION.
