DiseaseA SINGLE BLIND PILOT STUDY WITH HEALTHY SUBJECTS WAS CARRIED OUT IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE NEUROPHYSIOLOGIC EFFICACY (QUANTITATIVE EEG, EVOKED POTENTIALS) AND THE EFFECTS OF THE KAVA-EXTRACT WA1490 ON THE EMOTIONAL AND GENERAL PERSONALITY VARIABLES, ON THE SUBJECTIVE STATE AS WELL AS ON VARIOUS COGNITIVE PARAMETERS. THE QUANTITATIVE EEG SHOWED AN INCREASE IN THE BETA/ALPHA-INDEX TYPICAL FOR THE PHARMACO-EEG PRIFILE OF ANXIOLYTICS. THE INCREASE IN THE BETA-ACTIVITY WAS MOST MARKED IN THE BETA-RANGE. KAVA-EXTRACT WS 1490 SHOWED NO SEDATIVE-HYPNOTIC EFFECTS EVEN AFTER 600 MG. THE RESULTS OF THE EVOKED POTENTIAL STUDIES INDICATE THAT INFORMATION PROCESSING MAY BE IMPROVED IN THE CORTICAL AREAS STUDIED, I.E.VIGILANCE IS INCREASED. THESE FINDING CORRELATE WIHT THE RESULTS OF THE PSYCHOMETRIC TESTS WHICH INDICATED INCREASED ACTIVATION AND AN IMPROVMENT IN EMITIONAL STABILITY. NO UNWANTED SIDE EFFECTS WERE NOTED DURING THE TWO WEEK ADMINISTRATION OF KAVA- EXTRACT WS1490.
