| Disease | A SYSTEMATIC SERIES OF INVESTIGATIONS OF THE EFFECTS OF EPHEDRINE ALONE AND IN COMBINATION WITH CAFFEINE WERE CONDUCTED BY THE CANADIAN DEFENCE AND CIVIL INSTITUTE OF ENVIRONMENTAL MEDICINE. THE CAREFULLY CONTROLLED, PARAMETRIC STUDIES PROVIDE FAIRLY DEFINITIVE EVIDENCE OF THE BENEFICIAL EFFECTS OF EPHEDRINE ON AEROBIC PERFORMANCE. THESE DOUBLE-BLIND, PLACEBO-CONTROLLED STUDIES MEASURED TIME TO EXHAUSTION AS WELL AS A VARIETY OF PHYSIOLOGIC PARAMETERS. PERHAPS THE MOST CRUCIAL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE CANADIAN STUDIES AND THE WORK OF DEMEERSMAN AND HIS ASSOCIATES WAS THE DOSE OF EPHEDRINE EMPLOYED. THE DOSE EMPLOYED BY BELL ET AL. WAS NEARLY TWICE THE DOSE EMPLOYED IN THE NEGATIVE STUDY. FIGURE 1 PRESENTS THE RESULTS OF ONE OF THE BELL ET A. STUDIES CONDUCTED WITH A BICYCLE EROGMETER AS THE PERFORMANCE TASK. THIS STUDY DEMONSTRATES THE CLEAR PERFORMANCE ADVANTAGE PROVIDED BY ADMINISTRATION OF EPHEDRINE PRIOR TO EXERCISE. THE BELL STUDIES ALSO DEMONSTRATED CLEAR EFFECTS OF EPHEDRINE ON SEVERAL PHYSIOLIGIC PARAMETERS, INCLUDING VO2 MAX, AS WELL AS A SIGNIFICANT EFFECT ON RPE RELATIVE TO PLACEBO. |
