DiseaseA PLACEBO-CONTROLLED, DOUBLE-BLIND, BALANCED, 4-WAY, CROSSOVER DESIGN WAS UTILIZED. TWENTY PARTICIPANTS RECEIVED 120, 240 AND 360 MG OF A STANDARDIZED EXTRACT OF GINKGO OR A PLACEBO. THE ORDER IN WHICH THEY RECEIVED EACH DOSE WAS DETERMINED BY RANDOM ALLOCATION TO A POSITION ON A LATIN SQUARE TABLE OF TREATMENT ORDER. FOR EACH PARTICIPANT, THE DOSES WERE ADMINISTERED ON DIFFERENT DAYS, SEPATATED BY A 7-DAY WASH-OUT PERIOD. ON EACH STUDY DAY, PARTICIPANTS' PERFORMANCE ON THE COGNITIVE DRUG RESEARCH (CDR) COMPUTERISED COGNITIVE ASSESSMENT BATTERY WAS MEASURED IMMEDIATELY PRIOR TO DOSING AND AT 1 HR, 2.5 HR, 4 HR AND 6 HR FOLLOWING TREATMENT. THE MOST STRIKING OF THESE WAS A SIGNIFICANT ENHANCEMENT OF THE SPEED OF ATTENTION FACTOR FOLLOWING BOTH 240 AND 360 MG OF THE EXTRACT, THIS EFFECT HAD DEVELOPED BY 2.5 HR AND WAS STILL EVIDENT AT 6 HR. IN ADDITION TO THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF CHRONIC ADMINISTRATION OF GINKGO BILOBA IT APPEARS THAT SINGLE DOSES OF THE EXTRACT ARE CAPABLE OF SUSTAINED ENHANCEMENT OF IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF COGNITIVE PERFORMANCE.
