| Disease | THE EXTRACT ADMINISTERED WAS DESIGNATED AS GS4(WATER-SOLUBLE FRACTION OF AN ETHANOL EXTRACT). 27 PATIENTS WITH INSULIN-DEPENDENT DIABETES ON INSULIN THERAPY WERE INCLUDED IN THE STUDY. DOSING WAS DAILY FOR 2-30 MONTHS. INSULIN REQUIREMENTS CAME DOWN TOGETHER WITH FASTING BLOOD GLUCOSE AND GLYCOSYLATED HEMOGLOBIN AND GLYCOSYLATED PROTEIN, WHILE SERUM LIPIDS RETURNED TO NEAR NORMAL LEVELS WITH GS4 THERAPY. GLYCOSYLATED HEMOGLOBIN AND GLYCOSYLATED PROTEIN LEVELS REMAINED HIGHER THAN CONTROLS. PATIENTS RECEIVING ONLY INSULIN THERAPY SHOWED NO REDUCTION IN SERUM LIPIDS, GLYCOSYLATED HEMOGLOBIN OR GLYCOSYLATED PROTEINS WHEN FOLLOWED UP FOR 10-12 MOS. GS4 THERAPY APPEARS TO ENHANCE ENDOGENOUS INSULIN, POSSIBLY BY REGENERATION/REVITILIZATION OF THE RESIDUAL BETA CELLS IN INSULIN-DEPENDENT DIABETES MELLITUS. |
