DiseaseA CEREBRAL MALARIA PATIENT WAS TREATED WITH QUININE WHILE MEMBRANE CONDUCTIVITY OF ERYTHROCYTES WAS MEASURED. CONDUCTIVITY FELL DURING TREATMENT TO THE LEVEL OF NORMAL ERYTHROCYTES. THIS IS SAID TO BE BECAUSE A PARASITE-INDUCED INCREASE IN MEMBRANE PERMEABILITY (=CONDUCTIVITY) IS COUNTERACTED BY QUININE. THIS PROHIBITS THE ENTRY OF PHYSIOLOGICALLY RELEVANT SUBSTANCES TO THE CELL AND INHIBITS PARASITE GROWTH. DOSING WAS EVERY 8 HOURS.
