DiseaseRATS WERE ORALLY DOSED ONCE EVERY 3 DAYS WITH THE EXTRACT, TOTAL TERPENOIDS (211 MG/KG) OR TOTAL ALKALOIDS. CONTROL RATS WERE FED WITH 0.5% CARBOXYMETHYLCELLULOSE. BLOOD WAS DRAWN ON DAY 15 AND ASSAYED FOR LYMPHOCYTES BY ANAE STAINING. LEUCOCYTE COUNT WAS DECREASED, ESPECIALLY BY THE TOTAL "GLYCOSIDE" MIXTURE. TOTAL GLYCOSIDES AND TOTAL TERPENOIDS, BUT NOT TOTAL ALKALOIDS, ALSO DECREASED LYMPHOCYTE COUNT AND ANAE-POSITIVE LYMPHOCYTES(T-LYMPHOCYTES). GLYCOSIDES AND TERPENOIDS ALSO CAUSED NECROSIS OF ALL SPLENIC FOLLICLES AND ALMOST COMPLETE DISAPPEARANCE OF ANAE-NEGATIVE LYMPHOCYTES (B-LYMPHOCYTES).
